The Plame game
Wingnuts downplame the verdict.

I'll be blunt. That talking point won't fly. If you're doing a national security investigation, if you're trying to find out who compromised the identity of a CIA officer and you go before a grand jury . . .if it is proven that the chief of staff to the vice president went before a federal grand jury and lied under oath repeatedly and fabricated a story about how he learned this information, how he passed it on, and we prove obstruction of justice, perjury and false statements to the FBI, that is a very, very serious matter.
-- Patrick Fitzgerald

Bye bye Harriet
When specific outcomes matter.
What did we learn from the Miers debacle? That conservatives believe that a nominee's faith shouldn't be a factor? Nope. That they think all of Bush's nominees deserve an up or down vote? Nope. Don't let the code words fool you, we all know what they want.

Moron taxes
Starving the beast.
Instead of doing the sensible thing and repealing the Bush tax cuts in order to make up for revenue loses and astronomical deficits, conservatives want to "starve the beast", that is intentionally run up deficits to prevent the government from funding education, healthcare, and anything else except for weapons systems.

Some Recent ones

Oh Harriet

The right turns on Bush. Despite the fun we're all having watching them turn against each other, we need to beware of the underlying assumptions taken as Gospel.

Green ink
Right wing commentary on the environment is like klan lit on civil rights - it's just wrong. Despite scientific consensus to the contrary, wingnuts continue their assault on global warming. Throw in a little land rights, and next thing you know we can strip mine Yosemite.

Tax the rich

And feed the poor. As part of our "Death and Taxes" series we will continue to debunk wingnut tax economics.

Katrina, continued
This is the story of the hurricane. The devastation of Hurricane Katrina revealed the Bush Administration's incompetence to the world. It also tragically revealed the enormous gap that exists between the rich and poor in America. It’s unfortunate that it took a natural disaster to bring the media into poor urban neighborhoods.

Burn baby burn

Why the Right is way wrong on energy.

All this time the Left has tried to convince America that driving SUVs is destroying the Earth. How wrong we were—it turns out SUVs may have saved the Earth from another ice age. And you thought all you got from your gas guzzler was a false sense of security!

Here come da' Judge!
To act or not to act? Last week was extremely stressful for conservatives, especially the type that goes to bed worrying about how to take back the judicial branch. President Bush’s nominee for Chief Justice, John Roberts, was subjected to difficult questioning by Senate Democrats, who audaciously believe they have a right to know something about the nominee for the highest judicial position in the nation before they vote to confirm him.

Katrina

A natural and political disaster. Katrina exposed a lot. Like the need for effective government, sound energy policy, reliable transportation infrastructure, and compassionate social policy, for example. The hard truths exposed by this disaster revealed the ineptitude, deceitfulness and corruption that is the Bush administration for all the world to see. Thus, the faithful had to redirect blame, and repeat their failed mantras.

Got gas?

Katrina exposes our nation's need for a new energy policy. Regardless of the culpability of gas station owners, Katrina did expose the glaring problems of America’s current energy policies. This republican government’s wrongheaded approach to energy came to life in the energy bill that passed earlier this year.

Karen Hughes is back from her first trip to the Middle East as Undersecretary for Public Diplomacy, and the reviews have not been flattering. "Dangerous folly," declares Sidney Blumenthal, the former Clinton aide who knows something about propaganda (if not public diplomacy). "Hughes is helping bin Laden," adds Robert Pape of the University of Chicago.

Well, so much for liberal understatement. We, too, could pick nits with Ms. Hughes's performance, particularly on matters of style and presentation. But give her credit for this: At least she didn't try to "sell" the U.S. like a box of Wheaties.

As for next week's proceedings, one question remains to be seen: will the mainstream media make as big a deal over Saddam Hussein's trial as it did over, say, Scott Peterson's? Or as it doubtless will over Tom DeLay's hearings?

Previously on Fringe bytes:

They really do say this stuff

The reason New Orleans slid so quickly from civilization into Third World conditions was that it was pretty much a Third World city already, and didn't have too far to go. In its violence, in its corruption, in its reliance on ambience and tourism as its critical industry, in its one-party rule, in its model of graftocracy built on a depressed and crime-ridden underclass that was largely kept out of the sight and the mind of vacationing revelers, it was much more like a Caribbean resort than a normal American city. Its crime and murder rates were way above national averages, its corruption level astounding…

-- Noemie Emery, “A Two-City Tale,” The Weekly Standard, 09/06/05

How then shall we look at New Orleans and the devastation that occurred? If we look at this as one event in the long history of the world, and then look in the Bible to see how this might be an early warning of God’s judgment, we might look at the final judgment in Revelation 18:10-11: "For in one hour your judgment has come. And the merchants of the earth weep and mourn over her.

This description fits what happened to New Orleans and many people might say that New Orleans would be a good candidate for an early warning. Its immorality, corruption, and crime are legendary. Nevertheless, for nearly a century God spared the city from major hurricanes that everyone agreed would destroy it. When He finally did allow a major storm, there was a 3-day warning and plenty of time to evacuate, although the governor, mayor and thousands of residents either waited too long or ignored the warnings.
